Business and Economy ShahjahanpurShahjahanpur is well known for its carpet industry (kalin udyog) as well as for its sarafa (jewellery) market. Its more significant product is a knotted carpet, and it is also said that Shahjahanpur makes the most number of knotted carpets. The carpets that are woven are attractive with various different patterns. It takes up to three weavers to weave a single carpet, one to weave the main field of the carpet and the other two to weave the border of the carpet. Shahjahanpur has approximately 500 families that weave carpets for the domestic market. This industry, however, is on a decline because of a lack of support from government.
The biggest industry in Shahjahanpur is Kribhco Shyam Fertilizers Limited. This company produces 1.2 million tonnes of urea. Paper mills and sugar mills like the Dalmia & Roza Sugar Mill are also a large part of the city’s industry. Other than paper and sugar mills, there is the Ordnance Clothing Factory, run by the Ministry of Defence in the cantonment area of the city.
Ordnance Clothing Factory Shahjahanpur
The Ordnance Clothing Factory has a history that dates back to 1879. Sir Ashley Eden, the lieutenant governor of Bengal started three factories in Mumbai, Alipur and Chennai. These factories handled the work of stitching garments. On a one-year experimental basis, the factory in Alipur was shifted to Shahjahanpur in 1914. This branch of the factory was called Army Clothing Factory, Shahjahanpur. The shift was a successful attempt and eventually in 1925 Alipur’s factory was shut down permanently and the work was shifted to Shahjahanpur. The factory currently stitches garments and clothing items for the army, navy and the air force.
